“SAVVY HORSEMANSHIP” PURPOSE: “All You Have to do is Ride Naturally”

 

To provide a family oriented atmosphere that is entertaining, recreational, and educational for all while enhancing the owning and riding of horses. To encourage and continue the building of respect and communication between equine and human partner by hosting events that create better horses and better horseman.

“SAVVY HORSEMANSHIP” RULES

  1. All exhibitors will wear appropriate footwear that is designed for riding. No flip flops, tennis shoes, or bare feet.
  2. Riders are asked to have the following on them during the trail ride: halter and lead line, hoof pick, knife, and drinking water.
  3. Horse shall be shown in either Western or English saddle.
  4. No bareback riding or bare back pads allowed
  5. Horses of all ages may be shown in a snaffle, bosal, or curb bit.
  6. No tie downs, cavessons, gag bits, mechanical hackamores, running martingales, or any other “training devices” are allowed. A judge may prohibit the use of any equipment deemed to be inhumane.
  7. No wire curbs are permitted.
  8. Any unmanageable horse will be asked to leave the grounds. This applies to all horses, but especially to stallions.
  9. Stallions have to be double tied and display a yellow ribbon in tail at all times.
  10. No junior division rider is allowed to ride a stallion.
  11. Horses that kick must display a red ribbon in tail.
  12. Judges will have the authority to blow a whistle at any time to stop and or excuse any exhibitor who is not in control of their horse.
  13. Fall of horse/rider at any point on the course is a disqualification - you will be on the honor system.
  14. Horse must finish ride with a sound trot.
  15. A negative Coggins test dated at least 12 months of the date of the ride is required.
  16. Horses may wear protective boots.
  17. 'Ponying' will not be allowed during the competition.
  18. Horses can be tied to trailers, trees, and pole fences only.
  19. All dogs must be on a leash at all times.
  20. Please have current vaccinations for both your horse and dog on file while on the ride should an event need them to be present.
  21. Please pick up after your horses and dogs to keep our grounds clean and sanitary for all.
  22. If you win the novice (any green horse of any age, and/or any rider of any age) division 3 times, you must move up to the open division.
  23. All junior exhibitors (17 & under) must be accompanied by their parent/guardian and wear an approved safety helmet with attached chinstrap.
Savvy Horsemanship events are timed events during which the performance of each horse and rider team will be judged on each obstacle for quality of horsemanship. The judges will award performance for each obstacle with performance points on a scale of 1-10 based on the following criteria. Horses and riders are required to complete each obstacle within a given time frame in order to get points. If the obstacle is not completed in that time frame, the judge will flag that attempt and ask exhibitor to move on to the next obstacle:
  1. Horsemanship
  2. Direction and Control
  3. Horse’s Attitude
  4. Cadence
  5. Overall Execution


Ride Credits - Horses and Riders

  1. Credits will be given to horses negotiating obstacles with style and some degree of speed providing correctness is not sacrificed.
  2. Quality of movement and tempo should be considered part of the maneuver score for that obstacle.
  3. Horse is attentive and capable of finding his or her own way through the course when the obstacle warrants it, and willingly responds to the rider’s cue on more difficult obstacles.
  4. Rider shows timing, position and feel in negating the obstacle while communicating to the horse with dignity and respect.


Ride Deductions – Horses and riders

  1. Break of gait at walk or trot
  2. Placing both front or hind feet in a single-strided slot or space
  3. Unnecessary delay while approaching or going through obstacles
  4. Skipping over or failing to step into a required space
  5. Split pole in lope over
  6. Wrong lead or break gait at lope
  7. Stepping outside the confines of, falling off or out of an obstacle such as a back thru, bridge, side pass box or water obstacle.
  8. Refusals, balk or attempting to evade an obstacle by shying or backing
  9. Blatant disobedience (kicking out, bucking, rearing, striking)
  10. Failure to ever demonstrate correct lead or gait, if designated
  11. Failure to complete the obstacle
  12. Unnecessary or excessive kicking or harsh use of hands on horse are a deduction.


Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Conduct by any exhibitor, members, nonmembers, association members trainers, owners, owner’s representatives, spectators and all other persons present on the grounds of Savvy Horsemanship sponsored events shall be orderly, responsible, sportsmanlike, and humane in the treatment of horses. Any of these violations will be subject to dismal from the event and any future events.

  1. Any excessive force or unsportsmanlike conduct is subject to disqualification.
  2. Management reserves the right to refuse entry or disqualify participants


RETURN/CANCELLATION POLICY

  • Cancellations of any kind - refund less $15 office fee
  • If ride is cancelled by management – full refund
